Welcome to Sparkgap.net. We have good news and bad. While we are in
the process of constructing this stie, we have run into problems
between Netscape / Firefox / Mozilla and Internet Explore. So far, IE
has won. If you run Mozilla, then we are working hard to clear up the
problem.

Proposed National SOS Radio Network
The National SOS Radio Network is based on the millions of Family Radio Service (FRS) radios already in use for camping, boating, hiking, etc., and the nationwide network of 650,000 ham radio operators -- people renown & prepared for emergency communications. The result: Instant, reliable crisis communications.

Sounds of Sparkgap
In its simplest form a spark transmitter consists of a spark gap connected across an oscillatory circuit consisting of a capacitor and an inductor in series. The capacitor C (see Fig 1a) is charged to a high voltage by an induction coil (not shown). When the potential across it was sufficiently high to break down the insulation of air in the gap, a spark then passed... The condenser then discharged through the conducting spark, and the discharge took the form of a damped oscillation, at a frequency determined by the resonant frequency of the spark transmitter.

Loomis knew
radio before Marconi?
D
olbear was also late on the scene, for, as early as August 15, 1858,
an American dentist name Mahlon Loomis was beginning a series of
experiments in wireless telegraphy within the state of Ohio! With the
interruption of the American Civil War, Loomis continued his work. In
October of 1866 he sent signals between two mountaintops, about 15 miles
apart, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Senator Samuel Pomeroy of Kansas and
Representative John Bingham of Ohio were present at this demonstration.
Both men later gave much support on Loomis' behalf in the U.S. Congress.

Tornado!
Remember how to watch a tornado?
Tornados create an electrical disturbance somewhere in the 55 megahertz range, close to the frequency band assigned to channel 2.
Tune to channel 13 and turn the brightness control down tothe point where the image is nearly--not completely--black. Then turn to channel 2. Lightning will register as horizontal streaks on the screen. When the picture becomes bright enough to be seen, or when the screen glows with an even light, there's a tornado within 20 miles, and it's time to find Toto and head for the basement.
